I dance inside this cold, cool water
Beneath the warm night sky
I twist, caught in this ocean’s current
While none can see me cry

The winds they laugh and sing above me
With things of wings also
While I’m here in this water twirling
A dance only I know

The flying ones pause and gaze at me
Their eyes are filled with wonder
I am unlike anything they’ve seen
They hover while they ponder

I’ve seen them many times before this
But this time they see me
I’ve watched them fly through the vast sky
Inside this prison sea

They adore me for my uniqueness
While I just long for wings
These waters are not kind to me
And I would rather sing

I rise up to the edge of freedom
And look with longing clear
But the ones with wings cannot quite see
The hope I hold so dear

Eventually they fly away
But here I am still trapped
Idolized for my exoticness
While in this sea I’m wrapped

The thing that is so common here
Is the thing I want the most
While the thing that I would gladly trade
Is the thing that they would boast

I gaze once more at the flying ones
And reach with unseen hands
Then sigh and go back to my dance
That no one understands

I dance inside this cold, cool water
Beneath the warm night sky
I twist, caught in this ocean’s current
While none can see me cry
