Shades Of Gray

I’m walking through a dark, dark valley
No stars here to guide my way
The sun has set long, long before this
Yet still it’s many hours till day

Alien cries play tricks with my mind
Sweetly, they call out to me
Taunting, begging, hating, caring
All I wish is to be free

Free from this darkness in which I’m caught
Non-shadows just a shade of gray
A friend or foe? Heaven or Hell?
Here, right and wrong have no sway

Without warning this valley opens
The voices fade to whispers now
I run as fast and far as I can
And to myself I make a vow

Never again will I go down that path
Where hate masquerades as love
I’ll stay where my senses are kept straight
A demon can not handle a dove

A comforting glow blooms in the east
Further from the valley I flee
Yet, though sunlight’s cast upon my face
A shade of gray still shines on me
