Breathless

I'm drowning
Suffocating from air I refuse to breathe
The very air that at one time gave me life
The water realizes my motives
Slowly it tries to buoy me towards the surface
I resist-paddling harder
Swimming deeper
I'm weightless here in a waterworld of darkness
Trying to understand why I'm here to begin with
My memories are fading
The edges that define different scenes
Are becoming blurred
I open my eyes one last time
Trying to convince myself that it's ok
To give in to the air
It's more difficult to move now
My body is floating
I relax
I let go
I close my eyes and sink
Losing a battle I refused to fight
Never knowing what would have happened
If I had just taken one single breath
