A Poem For Dad

Daddies are very special
In many different ways
All the times I wish
You never moved away

We went to the summer fest
You thought you were cool
You were bobbing your head to Tu-Pac
We thought you were a fool

When I was a little girl
You would always say
You should not have done that
You are grounded for the rest of today

My friend and I were going to the movies
We didn’t get too far
We were right in front of Memorial Hospital
When I wrecked your girlfriend’s car

When I was in High School
I wanted to go to the dance
When I told you the cost of the dress
I thought you were going to shit your pants

I came home with my first hickey
I thought you were going to pass out
Instead you started screaming
Then told my boyfriend to get out

You say “howdy”
My friends say hello
You say “yeller”
We say yellow

I found out I was pregnant
You were the first person I told
I was crying uncontrollably
Thinking you’d knock my boyfriend out cold

Does not matter where you are
I can always reach you by phone
If I need you to be
You will always come home

You call me every night
Just to say goodnight and I love you
No matter what time it is
If I need you I know what to do

Happy Birthday Daddy
I hope you have a good day
This is the end of the poem
Because I don’t know what else to say
